During the Pless Medal of Honor
incident, copilot Capt. Rupert Fairfield was exiting the aircraft to
assist in carrying in the wounded men. He noticed three NVA soldiers
near the rear of the aircraft, he quickly grabbed the door mounted M60
machinegun, ripping it from its mounting post, and killed the three
soldiers before they could turn to fire upon him. For his part
in the rescue mission Fairfield was awarded the Navy Cross, America's
second highest award for valor in combat.
