State Representative Miguel "Mike" Wise authored the resolution in the 77th Texas Legislature that resulted in the Governor's award of the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor to Roy Benavidez. This was only the third time that the award has been given and it was the first time that it was awarded to a Vietnam veteran. Benavidez was the first hispanic to recieve the award. MABS photo. Colonel Frank Hudson, deputy commander of the 5th Special Forces Group read the Presidential Unit Citation, recently awarded by President Bush to all who participated in the operations of the Studies and Observation Group (SOG) which conducted covert operations in Cambodia, Laos, and North Vietnam during Vietnam War. He presented a certificate to the Mrs. Roy Benavidez recognizing him as an individual entitled to wear the ribbon representing this unit award. The 5th Special Forces group was the unit to which Roy Benavidez was assigned during his second tour in Vietnam. MABS photo. Benavidez Family Remarks. Yvette Benavidez commented that her father was a humble man and would not have accepted the award for himself, but for the men who faught alongside him on this day, May 2, exactly thirty years ago. Yvette Benavidez named many of the men who her father always remembered as his brothers in arms whenever he spoke of the action for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. The names included four who were killed in the action: WO2 Larry McKibben, Spec4 Michael Craig, Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Wright, and Staff Sgt. Lloyd Mousseau.
