Died with Roy Benavidez at his side as the medevac helo landed in Saigon after escaping from Cambodia.Leroy Wright and his two sons.  Wright was killed in action when his 12 man reconnaisance team was landed in a clearing controlled by a regiment of North Vietnamese Army regulars.  At first Wright skillfully avoided the enemy and was attempting to complete his mission but at last the enemy located his position and began to surround him.   During the ensuing battle Wright rolled himself onto a hand grenade to shield his teammates from its blast.  Although he was mortally wounded, he survived the blast and continued to fight, firing a rifle from his exposed position for a time before being killed by enemy fire. He received the Distinguished Service Cross posthoumously.  Photo: RPB.Roger Waggie successfully extracted the survivors of Leroy Wright's recon team, survivors of Larry McKibben's crew, and Roy Benavidez.  Unfortunately Waggie died of possible service related illness in 1998 before learning that he was at last to receive the Silver Star for his part in the May 2, 1968 action. Photo: RPB. He only learned that Benavidez had survived his wounds many years later.
